An Open Heart - Dalai Lama - COMPASSION--SYMPATHY FOR THE suffering of others and the desire to free them from it--is wrestled with in all spiritual traditions. Yet how does one actually become a compassionate person? What are the mechanisms by which a selfish heart is transformed into a generous heart?

When His Holiness the Dalai Lama came to New York City in 1999, he spoke simply and powerfully on the everyday Buddhist practice of compassion. Weaving together the contents of three sacred texts-- one by the eighth-century Indian master Kamalashila, another by the fourteenth-century Tibetan Togmay Sangpo, and a third by the eleventh-century sage Langri Tangpa--His Holiness showed that the path to compassion is a series of meditations. An Open Heart lays out this course of meditation, from the simplest to the most challenging, describing the mental training techniques that will enable anyone of any faith to change their minds and open their hearts. In this book the path begins with simple and clear ruminations on the advantages of a virtuous life and moves on to practices that can temper destructive and impulsive emotions. Such practices can be undertaken at odd moments of the day, at once transforming the aimless or anxious mind into a disciplined and open mind. Gradually, the book introduces the more challenging and sustained meditation practices. In these meditations the deepest and most profound insights of Buddhist practice become part of one's way of knowing and experiencing the world.

An Open Heart is a clear and simple introduction to the Buddhist path to enlightenment, by its greatest teacher, His Holiness - The Dalai Lama.

Francis Of AssisiFrancis Of AssisiAdrian House  - This book is written for readers of any faith or none. Although the whole of Francis's life was based on his belief in God, he was the least dogmatic of saints, seeing himself as God's troubadour or fool. It is unnecessary to share his faith in order to appreciate his soaring achievements.

His life (1182-1226) was rich in its succession of dramas. After his debauchery as a young playboy, merchant and soldier-he fought at the Battle of Collestrada—he stripped naked in court, abandoned everything he owned and devoted his life to the poorest and sick. The all-embracing relationship between him and Clare enriched each as man and woman. On his missions he walked over the Pyrenees barefoot, was shipwrecked and crossed the lines during the Fifth Crusade to parley with the sultan in Egypt. In 1224 marks similar to Christ's wounds appeared on his hands, feet and side, the first recorded case of the stigmata.

His feelings for creation, epitomized in his sermon to the birds, stimulated the realism of the Italian Renaissance artists; his vernacular poems inclined Dante to write The Divine Comedy in Italian, not Latin. The first religious order he founded, for men, had a radical effect on social justice and the developing universities in Europe; his second order, the Poor Clares, soon numbered hundreds, including royalty and half a dozen saints; his third, for laity sworn to peace, helped destroy the military power of feudalism. Men like Giotto, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Cervantes and Galileo allegedly joined the Third Order. But, above all, it is through his universal love that he has influenced the world for nearly eight centuries, drawing more than three million people every year to his tomb in Assisi.

About the Author:
Adrian House read medieval and modern history at New College, Oxford, and was for many years a publisher with William Collins (now HarperCollins) in London. He has spent four years researching and writing this book, living for six months in Assisi and visiting Franciscan sites, communities and libraries in the United States, Britain, Italy, Spain and Egypt.  ISBN 1587680092

Heart Self & SoulHEART SELF & SOUL A Sufi Approach to Growth, Balance, and Harmony - Robert Frager "I have heard of a seeker who went to ask a sage for guidance on the Sufi way. The old man said to him: 'If you have never trodden the path of love, go away and fall in love; then come back and see us.' " - Anonymous, from Essential Sufism, by Robert Frager and James Fadiman

The rich spiritual tradition of Sufism has helped to open the world's heart. Its treasures include the works of Rumi, the thirteenth-century mystic whose ecstatic love poems to the Divine are the best-selling poetry in English translation today. Robert Frager examines the Sufi tradition from the perspective of Western psychology. Full of poems, Sufi teaching stories, meditations, and engaging spiritual exercises, this first book on the inner dimensions of Sufism written by a Western psychologist will delight anyone seeking instruction in this passionate faith as well as nourishing the hearts and souls of everyone seeking growth, spiritual balance, and inner harmony.

Robert Frager, Ph.D., is the author and editor of numerous books on psychology and on the Sufi path, including Essential Sufism and Love is the Wine. A practicing psychologist and a student of Sufism for almost two decades, he teaches at the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology.

The Hidden GospelTHE HIDDEN GOSPEL - Decoding the Spiritual Message of the Aramaic Jesus - Neil Douglas-Klotz  In two previous books, Neil Douglas-Klotz pioneered a radical new way of translating the words of Jesus---filtering them through the imagistic worldview of the Aramaic language which Jesus himself spoke. Seen through this lens, familiar sayings such as "Blessed are the meek" come into vibrant contemporary focus as "Healthy are those who have softened what is rigid within."

In The Hidden Gospel, Douglas-Klotz employs this approach to decode the spiritual and prophetic messages hidden within key words and concepts in the sayings and stories of Jesus. We learn to our delight, for instance, that when Jesus spoke of "goodness," he used a word which in Aramaic means "ripe" and refers to actions which are in time and in tune with the Sacred Unity of all life. The Hidden Gospel aims to bridge the gap between the historical Jesus of the scholar and the Jesus of faith of Christian believers. It will appeal to everyone looking for an alternative spiritual vision of Jesus and his message.

Neil Douglas-Klotz, Ph.D., is an internationally known scholar in the fields of religious studies and psychology. A frequent presenter at conferences of the American Academy of Religion and the Society of Biblical Studies, he is author of Prayers of the Cosmos and Desert Wisdom.

KEY CONCEPTS IN THE PRACTICE OF SUFISM 1
M. Fethullah Gulen - "The heart is the home of God; purify it from whatever is other than Him so that the All-Merciful may descend into His palace at night."

About the Author
Known by his simple and austere lifestyle, Fethullah Gülen, affectionately called Hodjaefendi, is a scholar of extraordinary proportions. This man for all seasons was born in Erzurum, eastern Turkey, in 1941. Upon graduation from a private divinity school in Erzurum, he obtained his license and began to preach and teach about the importance of understanding and tolerance. His social reform efforts have made him one of Turkey's most well-known and respected public figures during the 1960s.

Though simple in outward appearance, he is original in thought and action. He embraces all humanity, and is deeply averse to unbelief, injustice, and deviation. His belief and feelings are profound, and his ideas and approach to problems are both wise and rational. A living model of love, ardor, and feeling, he is extraordinarily balanced in his thoughts, acts, and treatment of matters.

Turkish intellectuals and scholars acknowledge, either tacitly or explicitly, that he is one of the most serious and important thinkers and writers, and among the wisest activists of twentieth-century Turkey or even of the Muslim world. But such accolades of his leadership of a new Islamic intellectual, social, and spiritual revival—a revival with the potential to embrace great areas of the world—do not deter him from striving to be no more than a humble servant of God and a friend to all. Desire for fame is the same as show and ostentation, a "poisonous honey" that extinguishes the heart's spiritual liveliness, is one of the golden rules he follows.

Gülen has spent his adult life voicing the cries and laments, as well as the beliefs and aspirations, of Muslims in particular and of humanity in general. He bears his own sorrows, but those of others crush him. He feels each blow delivered at humanity to be delivered first at his own heart. He feels himself so deeply and inwardly connected to creation that once he said: "Whenever I see a leaf fall from its branch in autumn, I feel as much pain as if my arm had been amputated."

Making a Heart for GodMAKING A HEART FOR GOD - Dianne Aprile  Patrick Hart - (Aprile offers a thorough, readable introduction to the Trappists and experiencing one of their monasteries.)
The monastic experience demystified and an essential guide to what it is like to spend a week inside a Catholic monastery. A life of quiet, work and prayer, monasticism has been a part of the Christian spiritual tradition for over 1,700 years, and it remains very much alive today. This guide will prepare you for your own first venture into experiencing monastic spirituality and a fascinating way to deepen your spiritual life no matter what your faith tradition. Whether you're simply curious about what is behind the mystery, or interested in experiencing it firsthand, this is the ideal handbook. Also included are a helpful glossary of terms and a listing of monasteries throughout North America that receive visitors.

Maguire (The Power of Personal Storytelling) takes us through a week at Zen Mountain Monastery (Mount Tremper, NY) under the guidance of its abbot, John Daido Loori. The retreat experience here is very different. While Trappists impose little structure on guests, at a Zen monastery visitors follow a formal schedule and an ideal style of observance. Guests have a specific goal: waking up to oneself and one's life. The principal means of waking up and becoming attentive is zazen ("sitting meditation"), but other activities are also directed to that end: kinhin ("walking meditation"), dokusan or daisan ("meeting with a teacher"), and mondo ("informal question-and-answer sessions"), among other activites. Both books are well worth reading, and if they inspire one to spend time with the Trappists or Zen monks, so much the better. ISBN: 1893361497

THE OTHER HALF OF MY SOUL THE OTHER HALF OF MY SOUL : - Bede Griffiths - and the Hindu-Christian Dialogue - Beatrice Bruteau- Every age has its visionaries. Father Bede Griffiths, the gentle Benedictine monk who traveled to India to seek the other half of his soul was one such spiritual giant. Like Mother Teresa and Thich Nhat Hanh, Father Bede's spirituality transcends sectarian labels. His Shantivanam ("Forest of Peace") monastery in India is Christian in faith but Hindu in lifestyle. The essays and stories in this moving tribute to Father Bede by such luminaries as Thomas Keating, Matthew Fox, Rupert Sheldrake, and Thomas Berry dissolve the boundaries between Christian belief and Eastern practice. From the foreword by The Dalai Lama: " I have always believed that all the major religions of the world propagate love and altruism and attempt to transform their followers into better human beings ... I therefore have much admiration for the life-long work of Father Griffiths." Beatrice Bruteau, Ph.D., is coeditor of the journal American Vedantist. PATHS TO GOD: Living the Bhagavad Gita - Ram Dass

For centuries, readers have turned to the Bhagavad Gita for inspiration and guidance as they chart their own spiritual paths. As profound and powerful as this classic text has been for generations of seekers, integrating its lessons into the ordinary patterns of our lives can ultimately seem beyond our reach. Now, in a fascinating series of reflections, anecdotes, stories, and exercises, Ram Dass gives us a unique and accessible road map for experiencing divinity in everyday life. In the engaging, conversational style that has made his teachings so popular for decades, Ram Dass traces our journey of consciousness as it is reflected in one of Hinduism's most sacred texts. The Gita teaches a system of yogas, or "paths for coming to union with God."

In Paths to God, Ram Dass brings the heart of that system to light for a Western audience and translates the Gita's principles into the manual for living the yoga of contemporary life.

While being a guide to the wisdom of the Bhagavad Gita, Paths to God is also a template for expanding our definition of ourselves and allowing us to appreciate a new level of meaning in our lives.

QUESTIONS FROM THE CITYQUESTIONS FROM THE CITY, ANSWERS FROM THE FOREST, Simple Lessons You Can Use From a Western Buddhist Monk -
Ajahn Sumano Bhikkhu

"Sincere inquiry always sparks our movement towards truth. Deep questions signal the manifestation of the very energy through which we outgrow ourselves." - from the introduction

Born in Chicago, a law school graduate and real estate professional, Ajahn Sumano abandoned his comfortable American lifestyle for the begging bowl and simple cave home of an ordained Buddhist monk in the tradition of the Thai forest meditation masters. In 1994-95, Sumano conducted a series of question and answer evenings at a guest house in Thailand's Kowyai National Park with English-speaking tourists eager to meet a Western Buddhist monk. The heartfelt questions of these "city" people and the clear and penetrating answers Sumano gave from his "forest" perspective form the basis of this remarkable book. Written on a battered, batter-powered laptop in his meditation cave, Sumano's fascinating personal story and his refreshingly down-to-earth blend of American sensibility and Eastern practice will fascinate newcomers to Buddhist ideas as well as experienced practitioners.

Ajahn Sumano Bhikkhu is an ordained monk in the Theravadan Buddhist tradition. Though he makes annual trips to teach and speak in the U.S., he spends most of the year in solitary retreat in a mountain cave in northeastern Thailand.

REVELATIONS - Nick Mezin - How was the universe created, and why? What is the role of man on Earth, and that of intelligent beings on other planets, in it? Why is man here, what is expected of him? These are some of the questions that this book answers. The translator considers the material in this book as religion and philosophy of life for scientists - for scientists and for other people who are willing to think for themselves and to question commonly accepted beliefs. It tells how man should live so that it would be good for everyone, so that Christ's statement about "Paradise on Earth" would indeed come true.

This book tells about and explains The Almighty's religion of the universe. This in turn entails the reason for the creation of the universe, how the universe is being created and governed, and, yes, the very significant role which man on Earth is expected to play in this process. The Almighty's religion differs dramatically from all other religions currently practiced on Earth. It recognizes and acknowledges all other religions, it does not require an individual to join it. It does not threaten or condemn the "nonbelievers," it permits, it insists on each individual choosing freely for himself or herself. It merely provides some truly thought provoking material to ponder.
